Kylie officially honoured as UK’s queen of singles

Alan Carr presents Kylie with seven Official Number 1 awards on behalf of the Official Charts Company

The Official Charts Company has formally recognised Kylie as one of the all-time singles queens – marking her own 25th anniversary in music (K25) and the 60th anniversary of the Official Singles Chart.

Alan Carr did the honours on behalf of the Official Charts Company by presenting the pop superstar with seven Official Number 1 Awards to mark her seven UK number 1 singles, at her appearance on tonight’s Chatty Man.

The Official Number 1 Award is the new trophy launched by the Official Charts Company earlier this year to mark 60 years of the Official Singles Chart.  The award is now presented to each new single that reaches the coveted Number 1 spot in the Official Singles Chart.

The stats

Kylie’s status as a singles legend is underlined by the extraordinary stats surrounding her career:

  • Kylie is the 12th biggest selling singles artist of all time in the UK
  • 10.1m UK singles sales to her name
  • Can’t Get You Out Of My Head, her most successful song to date, sold 1.15 million copies in the UK, with an eye-popping 300,000 copies in its first week on sale back in 2001.
  • Can’t Get You Out Of My Head also features in the UK’s Official Top 100 biggest selling singles of all time at #72.

Martin Talbot, Managing Director of the Official Charts Company says “We are delighted to recognise Kylie’s amazing achievements over the past 25 years – her seven Number 1 singles puts her amongst the all-time great singles artists of the past 60 years, let alone the last 25. Having sold 10.1m singles in the UK through her career, she is the 12th biggest singles artist of all time. She may have been born in Australia, but she is most definitely a British national treasure!”

 The awards

The special awards are each bespoke printed with track title and date that the track went to Number 1 – a veritable feast to behold for lifelong Kylie fans!

From Kylie’s first Number 1 here in the UK  - I Should Be So Lucky back in February 1988, Especially For You (Pete Waterman’s PWL record label’s biggest selling single ever), Hand On Your Heart (which knocked Bangles’ Eternal Flame off its 4 week chart-topping run), Tears On My Pillow, the famed ‘comeback’ single Spinning Around (featuring those hotpants), the iconic Can’t Get You Out Of My Head (Number 1 for 4 consecutive weeks), through to 2003’s Slow.

Fast-forward to 2012 and Kylie is still causing a stir amongst her army of fans. The Twittersphere was set alight last Friday as fans were urged to tweet the words #KylieTimebomb in order to unlock a surprise new single from the Aussie superstar. Her new video for Timebomb sees the pop queen once again rocking a pair of hotpants as she struts through the streets of Central London, including Soho’s famous Old Compton Street. Timebomb is currently the Number 1 selling music video single on I-tunes in UK, Australia, Italy, Spain & Brazil, (#2 in US & #3 in Canada).
